Am I a dom or a sub? Many people ask it the first time a fantasy about power feels exciting. In kink, a dom is the person who leads a scene, and a sub is the person who chooses to follow, both within limits agreed in advance. A switch enjoys both sides. Neither role is better, and neither says anything about who you are at work or at home. This guide explains the roles, the words around them, and a few honest questions that help you notice where you feel at ease. It is not a test with a verdict, and it is not explicit.

The roles in a few words

Dom
Short for dominant. The person who leads: sets the pace, gives instructions, holds the structure of the scene.
Sub
Short for submissive. The person who chooses to follow and to hand over control, within limits they set.
Switch
Someone who enjoys both sides, depending on the partner, the mood or the day.
Brat
A sub who teases, resists playfully and provokes on purpose, as part of the game.
Praise
Kind, approving words, enjoyed by many subs, and used by many doms to reward.

The full vocabulary is in the kink glossary, and kink for beginners explains the principles that hold all of it together.

Questions that help you notice your side

  1. 1

In your fantasies, who decides what happens next?

The answer often points to your side, even if it changes from one fantasy to the next.

  2. 2

Which feels more relaxing: deciding or being guided?

Some people find rest in giving up decisions, others in holding them.

  3. 3

Which words would you rather hear, or say?

    Instructions, praise, a playful challenge.

  4. 4

Does one side feel like a role you would enjoy playing for an evening?

Roles can be tried in imagination, in words, or in a story before anything else.

There is no score at the end. If both sides appeal to you, you may be a switch. If neither does, that is just as valid: plenty of people enjoy kink without power play at all.

The switch and the brat

A switch is not undecided. Many switches have a clear preference with each partner and simply enjoy both experiences. A brat is still on the sub side: the provocation is a way of inviting the dom to take control, and it only works when both enjoy the game. Brat behaviour is consensual teasing, never real disrespect, and it stops the moment someone says the agreed word.

The same safety on both sides

Whichever side you are on, the foundations are identical. A conversation before anything happens, using a negotiation checklist. A safeword that stops everything, at any time, for either person. A gentle pace for anything new. And care afterwards, which matters to doms as much as to subs. Fantasies about power are common and do not mean anything is wrong, as are sexual fantasies normal explains.

When a side becomes content

For a creator, a role gives a page its tone. On the dom side, it is the voice that leads, decides and rewards, developed in femdom explained and in edging and orgasm control. On the sub side, it is a mood of trust, of following, or of playful provocation.

Questions and answers

How do I know if I am a dom or a sub?

Look at who decides in your fantasies, which feels more relaxing to you, and which words you would rather hear or say. The answer can change over time.

Can a woman be dominant?

Yes. Female dominance is a common and well established role. Femdom explained describes it.

Is being submissive a sign of low self esteem?

No. Choosing to hand over control in a consensual setting is a preference, not a weakness, and many submissive people are very confident in daily life.

What is a brat tamer?

A dom who enjoys a brat’s provocation and answers it playfully, taking control back within the agreed limits.
